๐บ๐ธ United States of America
This page is for information related to the US specifically.
IMPORTANT CHANGES for our members in the US:
We just created a new SafeBlood website which is tailor made for the USA, with additional services we offer only in the US, and this is the link: safeblood.com.
During the next few weeks we will do a transition from safeblood.us to safeblood.com, which will then allow you to log in into every safeblood site world wide. However, the main site for the USA will be safeblood.com.
If you plan to become a member and live in the USA, please use from now on the safeblood.com.
The situation now:
Designated blood donations as well as donations of your own blood for yourself are possible throughout the US hospitals. However, they may not welcome you in every single one of them – this is what we will change.
Update July 2024: Red cross has changed guidelines. Please read this blog post.
What WE do:
Our acting plans:
We are in the process of setting up a team for the US and each state, which will establish the most feasible way to reach our goal, the free choice of blood (and blood donor). This will happen through finding medical partners (hospitals, laboratory chains, private practices etc.), and most importantly, by trying to reduce the need for transfusions in general with clear advises for medical staff in our membersโ living will.
We will write to all clinics in the US regarding their policies with unvaccinated patients, and will publish the results in our member area (under “Medical partner search“).
If we can not find enough suitable partners, we will have to set up our own chain of places to donate and store blood (blood bank).
We will translate the website to Spanish soon, in order to tear down the language barrier.
A telegram channel for easy information is complementing this page here. And of course you are welcome to follow us on Twitter.
You can search for a donor in the member area under “Search for blood donor“. Please don’t write me an email “is there a blood donor with AB+ in Washington?” – you find the answer yourself under the mentioned link.
What YOU can do:
If you want to join us and help within the team, please contact us.
Spread the word, and most importantly, become a member โ because only together we are strong.
Please note that there are NO blood donation stations set up yet, nowhere in the US, as we need medical partners for this purpose first. This will take some time, but we are very close and being approached by private medical labs on a daily basis. Check back here frequently and subscribe to our newsletter (under “Contact”).

Media inquiries (by e-mail only):
One question we often hear is “How much do you pay for my blood?”
We are an NGO and the reward for your blood donation is to know that you will also get uncontaminated blood once you will need it. So no, we don’t pay – we are “members taking care of members”, a community aware of a huge threat to our health – we are not “blood dealers”. We can and will never make a business with your blood. So the label “SafeBlood” will be a brand you can trust. Other private labs will buy your blood – and sell it to the cosmetic and rejuvenation industry. If you don’t mind, sell your blood there. If you want to save lives, stick to us.
Updates and NEWS:
Are posted here below by our team of authors โ the most important news are updated here regularly.
Good news for Canadians, Europeans, Mexicans and citizens of all other countries coming to the U.S. for surgery: As of May 11, 2023, the Biden administration has lifted its Covid-19 vaccine mandate on all foreign air travelers entering the United States. This means everybody is welcome to have surgery in the US, where many hospitals allow free choice of blood donors. And since we have many members in the US, there are plenty of blood donors available to share with safeblood members from countries, where the free choice is not possible yet.
Last remark: You want to know whether we have a matching blood donor in your area? become a member and search for it here. As a member you are able to search by blood group AND location.

Red Cross USA changes guidelines – increases the hurdle for directed donations
As of July 2024, we learn that the US RED CROSS has changed the guidelines for directed donations as follows:

This has serious consequences, as you can read in this message from our US team leader Demi:
“SITUATION REPORT – THE RED CROSS
I spoke with a member on the phone yesterday who put in a donor request back in May. She is a patient with the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, which up until now we have considered a “friendly” facility.
I referred her donors to her, and I believe she was able to arrange her first round of directed blood donations successfully. Her doctor signed and sent to the Red Cross their standard one-page form which contained her name and the names of all her donors.
However, she still needed a second round of transfusions. Everything was falling into place for her to receive her second round of directed blood donations, but then…
LAST WEEK THE RED CROSS CHANGED THEIR DIRECTED BLOOD DONATION POLICY!
According to the member I spoke with last night, the Red Cross directed blood donation form has now expanded to TWO PAGES. The second page contains a litany of “risks” to the donor when giving directed donor blood.
Red Cross “policy” now requires the ordering physician to PERSONALLY CALL EVERY DONOR ON THE LIST and READ TO THEM THE LIST OF “RISKS” and ensure that they understand them.
Because of this new policy, even though page one of the blood collection order had already been sent in, the Red Cross refused to fill her blood collection order unless and until her doctor personally calls every single one of her donors and then verifies that he has done so.
At that point, her doctor said “I’m not doing that.” So her directed blood donation is on permanent “hold” with her hemoglobin critically low. She is too weak to travel, and the nearest “friendly” facility is two hours’ away. Moreover, she doesn’t have a doctor with any of the “nearby” (2+ hours’ drive) facilities even if she tried to get there. She was quite distraught last night, and unfortunately I didn’t have any real options to offer.
Obviously, this is an attempt to SHUT DOWN DIRECTED DONATIONS. The unreasonable amount of a physician’s time required to personally call every donor on a patient’s directed donor list and read through a list of “risks” means that more and more doctors going forward will refuse to write a blood collection order for their patients.
Be aware that any hospital which uses the Red Cross for directed blood donations might soon disappear as an option.
HEADS UP!”
Well, Demi is the one who helps our members make the difficult less difficult for them, and usually very successfully. This means that with this new hurdle we will always have to look for an alternative to the Red Cross, and fortunately there are private labs on the market. We will stay tuned…
We hope that with Biden out of office, the headwinds will lessen.
